Local Time [Outline and History] Medium: Performance, publishing, collaborations
Local time is a collective of artist academics and art/cultural writers based in Auckland / Tamaki Makaurau. Current members are Danny Butt, Jon Bywater, Dr Alex Monteith & Natalie Robertson. The group is cohered with a strong interest in local and Pacific concerns in constellation with international developments and dialogues in new technology & culture. Non-urban sites are important to Local Time as a group & many of our projects happen in more remote parts of New Zealand.
Local Time collective members meet regularly to discuss projects and work in an open flexible way between projects of the Local Time collective (Local Time projects) and on more individual projects initiated from any given member of the collective. An annual week-long meeting over the summer period, held at Omaewa (Natalie Robertson Ngati Porou | Donnachiadh), Port Awanui, Ruatoria, East Cape | Ngati Porou, has between 2004 and 2009 evolved towards a wananga situation for artists writers and environmental workers.
The main current Local Time project is research (towards publication) and interviews with national and international artists and curators on aspects of collaborative practice and new media. This is a University of Auckland and AUT cross collaboration with aspects of the project being jointly supported from both the Elam School of Fine Arts and The AUT School of Art and Design. Interviewees include: Sally Jane Norman (UK), Rachel Rakena (NZ), Bjornstjerne Christiansen (Superflex) & Julia Rodrigues, Sarah Cook (UK), Dominic Smith (The Polytechnic UK) & Brett Stalbaum (c5, USA).
The collaborative process of the group is such that any member can initiate or suggest a trajectory for the activities of the group and roles frequently change. In this form co-authored and collaboratively made artworks have been participated in by the group including:

Re-enactment of the Return of the C-Coy of the Maori Battalion, Gisborne, & Te Poho o Rawiri Marae Oct 2009 (link): members Alex Monteith and Natalie Robertson. Co-authoring documentary content of the 3.5km hikoi between Gisborne train station Te Poho o Rawiri Marae. Additional to exhibition the works, the footage was returned to both Maori Battlaion war vets (who were involved at the Powhiri at Te Poho o Rawiri so could not also simultaneously walk the parade route) and the Porou Ariki Kapa Haka group. Works produced:
1. 55min dual channel video documentation and installation, 2xHDV recordings shot from a NZ Army Unimog moving at the front of the Hikoi. Alex Monteith.
Roles: Alex Monteith HDV rigging, shooting editing and post production. Natalie Robertson logistics & crewing.
2. 120mm & digital image archive of the hikoi. Roles: Natalie Robertson 120mm suite of still images, high resolution digital protraits and hand-held video documentation of the hikoi. Alex Monteith logistics, gear running and crewing.
